What do you do?
I am a civil engineer by profession and have been in the construction industry for over 35 years. During that time I have specialized in project management, lean construction and now safety. My position is Senior Vice President Safety.
My role is to help and support the business develop and apply its safety strategy cross all our home markets. In practice this means that I work with my team at GSU Safety to support the business unit senior management teams and safety specialists develop and deliver their safety objectives.
This means lots of face to face sessions, which is the best way to exchange ideas and understand what support you give. Unfortunately, this means lots of traveling and waiting at airports.
What keeps you motivated?
We still have a long way to go to achieve the safety performance that we want. We still have accidents, we still have fatalities. That is motivation enough but it is a joy to work with and help people in Skanska.
What are your main challenges?
To eliminate fatalities and help Skanska achieve its zero accident target.
Skanska has a culture that suits me. Over time, you work in different organizations and with different people. Sometimes you are fortunate enough to work in an organization whose thinking fits with your own. This is how I think of Skanska.
It is an organization with a genuine concern for those that work for it – employees and contractors. It wants to do the right thing. We don’t always get it right but we want to.
