International initiatives

Skanska is an active participant in a number of international Sustainability initiatives. Amongst the most significant are the following:

World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)

Skanska AB has been a member since the formation of World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) in 1995. Over the years it has participated in a wide range of WBCSD initiatives of which the Energy Efficiency in Buildings (EEB) project is the most significant. As a part of the EEB project, we signed the EEB Manifesto in 2009 that commits us to walk to the talk and improve the energy efficiency of the offices we occupy. Recently we have committed to act as co-chair on the “Mainstreaming Life cycle assessment for buildings and materials” project, a project that will be working with the different stakeholders in the buildings value chain to develop a business approach to the complex subject of material and building life cycle assessment.

United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)

Skanska AB has been a participant since the UNGC was established in 2000. View our UNGC Communication on Progress (COP). In addition, Skanska is active in the UNGC Nordic Network, which is a network of around 180 companies and business associations. View the Skanska Cooper River Bridge Project case study addressing the UN Global Compact's Ten Principles. Skanska was a member of the Steering Committee led by UNGC and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) that developed the resource "Advancing Responsible Business Practices in Land, Construction and Real Estate Use and Investment".

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

Since established in 2006, Skanska AB has been a sponsor of the UNEP "Sustainable Buildings and Climate Initiative". Skanska has chaired a global taskforce developing policy recommendations on how to accelerate greening of the built environment supply chain. Read Greening the building supply chain report from UNEP-SBCI.

The Prince of Wales's Corporate Leaders Group (CLG)

Skanska is the only Nordic company in this high level initiative which supports EU policy makers in the field of Climate Change. Skanska actions include signing of the annual Communiqués and recent engagement in the Polish Business & Science Climate Coalition – an initiative to accelerate CO2 emissions reductions in Poland. Together with CLG we assisted the World Business Council for Sustainable Development with its Polish Energy Efficiency in Buildings Laboratory and our Polish Business Unit President was the only business leader from central Europe to participate in the 2014 EU Green Growth Summit.

World Economic Forum (WEF)

As an active partner of the WEF, Skanska AB supports several of the Forum's sustainability initiatives. Skanska has played a significant role in the establishment of the Forum's Partnering Against Corruption Initiative and Skanska is a supporter of the Forum's Disaster Resource Network.

European Network of Construction Companies for Research and Development (ENCORD)

Skanska is a member of ENCORD where it is active on best practice development and promotion for Building Information Modelling, Health & Safety and Climate Change challenges in the Built Environment. Read more about the the Construction Sustainability Charter>> signed by Skanska.

The World Green Building Council (WorldGBC)

The World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) is a global not-for-profit organization working to transform the property industry towards sustainability through its members, national Green Building Councils (GBCs). Skanska is a Partner of the European Network of GBCs. We are active in twelve national GBCs, with Skanska senior executives currently on the board of five of those GBCs. Skanska also acted as sponsor of the WorldGBC’s work on the business case for green buildings. Recent work with the WorldGBC focused greatly on the associated Health, Wellbeing and Productivity benefits of green buildings. As part of this project we have committed to use selected projects to help confirm these benefits through the piloting of the Metrics Framework. Green Building Councils (GBCs)

We support national GBCs, which are part of the WorldGBC network, in our home markets. GBC members typically represent all built environment stakeholders within their country. Whilst their objectives may differ, the mission of all GBCs is to drive market transformation of the building industry through member consensus and cooperation.

Skanska supports the following GBCs

Construction Sector Transparency Initiative (CoST)

Skanska has in 2011 endorsed the Construction Sector Transparency Initiative (CoST) which is an international multi-stakeholder pilot project in eight countries started in 2008. CoST seeks to achieve transparency through the public disclosure of information at various stages of the construction project cycle in a way that helps stakeholders to hold the project agency accountable for value and quality. CoST is currently being scaled up to become a global initiative. The pilot project was funded by the UK Government's overseas development agency (DFID) with support from the World Bank. Read more about CoST.
