Safety timeline

Our journey to deliver a world class safety performance with zero accidents began in 2001. Through safety values, increasing competence and developing a culture of learning and continuous improvement, Skanska’s safety performance improves year after year.

2016

Our re-articulated value; Care for Life explains our view and how we strive to work with Safety across Skanska. "We work safely, or not at all" and "We never walk by if we notice unsafe actions.".

2015

During 2015 there has been an increased emphasis on visible leadership, health and well-being as well as providing good opportunities to exchange knowledge and good practice across Skanska.

2014

May 5 to 11, 2014, we are celebrating our 10th Global Skanska Safety Week by reaching out to our colleagues in the industry for shared activities.

2013

Skanska Global Safety Leadership Team has initiated a Safety Peer Review program across Skanska to share knowledge and experience between one Business Unit to another.

2012

Skanska is committed to be a leader in Safety. Our Safety Road Map will support our journey to zero accidents.

2011

Safety Road Map launched as part of Skanska’s drive to reach its 2015 milestones.

Skanska signed ENCORDS (The European Network of Construction companies for Research and Development) sustainability charter including its commitment to a safe and healthy work environment.

2010

Global Safety Leadership Team formed comprising 14 senior managers from across Skanska including the CEO.

New Business Plan for 2015 with a milestone of LTAR 1.0 / million hours, which corresponds to eliminating three out of four work related accidents.

2009

Global Safety Stand Downs (GSSDs) are carried out following a work related fatality to pay respect to the individual as well as capture and spread learning to prevent recurrence. GSSDs are held at every Skanska work place across the world involving employees and subcontractors.

2008

Executive Site Safety Visits (ESSVs) introduced as the first Global Leading Indicator to demonstrate visible and clear leadership from senior managers.

2007

Updated Safety Policy and Guidelines. In addition, four Global Safety Standards were introduced on Risk Assessment, Work at Heights, Personal Protective Equipment and Induction. An additional eight global standards were rolled out in 2010.

2006

New Global Safety Reporting introduced using the one day Lost Time Accident Rate (LTAR) / million man-hours as a common measure of accident performance. LTAR decreased by 50% in the period of 2005-2010 for Skanska employees.

2005

Skanska holds its first Global Skanska Safety Week. It helps us redouble our efforts to eliminate accidents and gives us a chance to do something new together. It has become the largest safety event in one single company, involving over a quarter of a million employees and subcontractors with numerous activities and training sessions.

2004

Skanska introduces the four Zeros: Zero Accidents, Zero Environmental Incidents, Zero Ethical Breaches and Zero Loss-makers. The fifth zero — Zero Defect was introduced 2007.

The CEO, launches the Skanska Safety Strategy with the vision of injury free workplace.

Skanska holds its first global Safety Day.

2002

Implementation of the Skanska Code of Conduct, where we commit to provide a safe and healthy working environment.

Skanska revises the Environmental Managers Forum (EMF) to SHEMF (Safety, Health and Environment Mangement Forum), attended by heads of safety across Skanska.

2001

Skanska was one of the first signatories to the UN Global Compact, subscribing to the ten universally accepted principles of human rights.
