PRESS RELEASE, DECEMBER 15, 1999               104/99

Skanska to design and construct a water storage facility in Boston for USD 90 million, about SEK 760 million Skanska’s US subsidiary Slattery Skanska, in joint venture with J. F. White, was awarded a USD 90 million contract to design and construct the Norumbega covered water storage facility in Boston, Massachusetts. Slattery Skanska’s share is 40%. The customer is the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (MWRA). The contract is the first utilizing the design/build delivery process that has been awarded in the state of Massachusetts. The Slattery Skanska joint venture is responsible for total implementation, from design through construction of the entire facility. The Norumbega water storage facility is being constructed to comply with new state guidelines regarding the storage and delivery of drinking water to Boston. The new guidelines no longer allow open-air water storage facilities. The buried concrete water storage tank will hold 115 million gallons (more than 500 million liters). The project involves extensive concrete casting. The exterior walls will be about 2 feet wide. The joint venture is responsible for piping connections, instrumentation and controls. The project also involves connections between the tank and the proposed Metro West Water Supply Tunnel. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2002. An important aspect of the project is the landscaping, which must match the surrounding open fields and woods to ensure that the MWRA meets requirements of low visual impact. Slattery Skanska is also involved in construction of the large water supply tunnel under the Manhattan district of New York City. Slattery Skanska’s involvement in this project, scheduled to be completed in 2002, is USD 36 million.
