SKANSKA AND NCC CONDUCT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT IN KASHMIR
Skanska and NCC have formed a consortium which has signed a letter of intent with the Indian government to tender a bid to construct a power station in Kashmir. The so-called Kishanganga dam will be built on contract to the state administration in Kashmir. The area is highly underdeveloped and in great need of power supply.
The customer is responsible for an environmental impact assessment.
"So that we can also reach a conclusion about the environmental impact, we will contract for a complementary independent environmental impact assessment," says Per-Ingemar Persson, business area manager, Skanska Sweden. "It will provide a basis for our decision whether or not to participate in the project."
"The consortium is currently evaluating the offers for the environmental impact assessment received from two independent, external companies," says Lars Wuopio, business area manager, NCC Civil Engineering."
The customer has undertaken to provide new housing for the families who must be relocated.
"In negotiations, we have requested guarantees from the customer so that they assume social responsibility for the families, about 7,000 people, who will have to evacuate the area," says Lars Wuopio.
