Skanska has been selected to renew the town shopping and leisure center in Uxbridge, which is situated close to Heathrow International Airport in the south west area of Greater London. The order is worth approximately SEK 930 M. The contract, which includes design and building work, will be carried out jointly in a consortium owned on a 50/50 basis with the UK's Costain.
The customer is CSC Uxbridge, part of Capital Shopping Centres, one of the United Kingdom's four largest real estate companies.
The project to modernize the town shopping and leisure center includes the building of a new 60,000 square-meter shopping and entertainment center. The new complex will accommodate department stores, multi-screen cinema, day-care centers and offices, plus a parking area for 1,600 cars.
"We are very proud that the customer has selected us for this extensive and highly complex project. This is one of the largest investments made in a UK shopping center during the 1990s. We can also note that our focus on the attractive UK market is beginning to bear fruit," says Lars Johansson, Vice President of Skanska International Building AB, who is responsible for the company's UK operations.
Skanska and Costain will also be responsible for new and refurbished buildings on the High Street, a reconstructed timber frame building, external works, dualling of the highway and remodelling of the High Street.
Work on the site is to be started immediately and the new Uxbridge Centre will be officially opened in February 2001.
