Skanska to renovate old studio city for SF

Skanska has been contracted for the renovation and construction of premises for SF Bio and Svensk Filmindustri at the famed "Old Studio City" in the Stockholm suburb of Solna. The Building Control Board in Solna decided yesterday (August 25) to give the go-ahead to begin work.

As a result of the Building Control Board decision, Old Studio City will be a city section with small residential blocks adjacent to new movie theaters and work premises.

The decision means that the film producers and distributors SF Bio and Svensk Filmindustri will be returning to historical grounds.

"Construction of premises for SF Bio and Svensk Filmindustri ensures continued film activities in Old Studio City," says Mats Johansson, business manager and project leader at Skanska Residential Construction - Stockholm.

"Skanska will construct three new movie theaters and exhibition premises. There will also be café and restaurant operations. We plan to make Old Studio City an open meeting place, where everyone feels welcome, especially residents in the surrounding area," says Mats Johansson.

All the historically listed buildings in the Old Studio City will be renovated. Listing as a heritage building means that the property may not be changed externally. In addition to SF Bio, small companies will be offered premises in the culturally historical buildings.

In other sections of Old Studio City, Skanska will construction housing in cooperation with HSB Stockholm.

"The housing area will blend with the movie theaters and work premises, which will first require a change in the development plan. Then Skanska will construct four- or five-story apartment buildings, which is lower than the current development plan prescribes," says Mats Johansson.

"The residential buildings will feature studio apartments and glass surfaces similar to the old studios. We plan to give the new buildings names and design features after the famous movie stars who worked in the old studio area.

"The new development plan will provide for the possibility to construct a film museum. Skanska would be pleased to construct a film museum in Old Studio City, if we were assigned the project," concludes Mats Johansson.

Old Studio City in Solna is one of many attractive projects currently being developed by Skanska Residential Construction - Stockholm.
