Skanska to construct Prague R1 ring road for approximately SEK 1.3 billion

Skanska has secured a contract to construct a section of the new R1 ring road in Prague. The contract amount totals approximately SEK 1,840 M (CZK 5.9 billion), of which Skanska's share is 70 percent, corresponding to SEK 1,290 M. The order amount is included in order bookings for the first quarter of 2006.

The customer is Czech Road and Motorway Directorate. The project is being partly financed by government funds and partly through the European Investment Bank (EIB).

The assignment is for a 8.3-kilometer expressway section of the ring road between Vestec and Lahovice, south of the Czech capital. The project includes a 236-meter bridge over the Vltava River and a two-kilometer tunnel with two tunnel tubes.

Sections of the new expressway will pass near residential areas. To reduce noise levels, the road will be constructed through a deep cutting and sound barriers will also be constructed in certain sections. In natural areas, three flyovers will be constructed for animals to cross. Construction will also include a number of interchanges, approach roads and a rail bridge.

Work will commence in the spring of 2006 and will be completed in 2009.

The project is being conducted by a consortium led by Skanska, which has been assigned a 70-percent share. The remaining 30 percent is assigned to Alpine Mayreder Bau GmbH.

Skanska Czech Republic, which is the largest construction company in the Czech Republic, had sales of approximately SEK 10 billion in 2005, with about 7,000 employees. The company's largest projects in progress include expansion of the subway and rail systems in Prague, as well as the construction of a new head office for CSOB, a Czech bank.
