Skanska instrumental in the first global standard for carbon dioxide reporting in the construction industry
The construction industry’s first standardized, global methodology for measuring and reporting carbon dioxide has been launched and put into use. The European Network of Construction Companies for Research and Development (ENCORD) Carbon Dioxide Measurement Protocol is the name of the new methodology for carbon dioxide measurement and reporting according to Scope 1 and Scope 2 in the construction sector.
Skanska has been instrumental in the process for the new global methodology, which was reached in agreement with 17 other companies in the sector. The methodology has been endorsed by a number of key environmental bodies, including the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), World Green Business Council (WGBC) and the World Resources Institute (WRI).
“This is an important step for the environment and for our customers, who will now find it easier to compare the carbon emissions of different companies. By using a standardized measurement method, we will also establish a better basis to reduce emissions,” says Noel Morrin, SVP Sustainability and Green Construction, Skanska AB.
Skanska will henceforth apply the ENCORD Carbon Dioxide Measurement Protocol throughout its operations. Near-zero carbon emissions is one of Skanska’s focus areas. Skanska is the only construction company to be included for the past two years in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Index and the Nordic Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index.
