Skanska is carrying out security and construction work at the bomb-damaged American embassy in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.
The customer is the U.S. State Department and work is being carried out on a cost-plus basis.
The assignment involves securing the damaged building to facilitate the FBI's investigation efforts and to provide the U.S. embassy with temporary quarters as well as equipping these premises with the required security measures.
A team of 80 persons from Skanska Jensen International have been integrated into a task force which includes security personnel from the FBI as well as American engineers and other experts.
- Both the clean-up work and the task of setting up temporary quarters is very urgent. We are facing a major challenge to meet the customer's requirements. All available resources are being used to ensure rapid and satisfactory service, says Neil Reynolds, head of Skanska Jensen International's operations in Tanzania.
Additionally, Skanska is carrying out repair work on the French and Nigerian embassies which were also damaged in the bombing that claimed ten lives and injured 70 persons.
In 1993, Skanska's U.S. subsidiary carried out repair and reinforcement work on the bomb-damaged World Trade Center in New York. During the civil war in Somalia, Skanska built up the UN headquarters in Mogadishu. During the same period, Skanska also secured the water supplies to the large refugee camps in northeastern Kenya and was responsible for upgrading the airfields and roads in the area.
