BROADENED CONSTRUCTION OPERATIONS AND PROJECT DEVELOPMENT LEAD TO GEOGRAPHIC ORGANIZATION
Skanska is now focusing more heavily on construction-related services and project development. Accordingly, a new organization based on these operations will become effective on February 1, 1998.
Construction-related operations will be organized into three business areas: Sweden, Europe and USA. The specialization in road, civil engineering and housing construction, which is currently structured within the Civil Engineering and Building business area will be distributed within the three new geographical business areas. The operations with the Industry business area will be distri-buted within the Sweden and Europe business areas.
Concurrently, a new unit is being formed, Real Estate and Project development, which will mainly include the operations in the current Real Estate and BOT Projects business areas.
"This change will enable us to better respond to customers needs and meet their demands in all stages of the construction process - from project development to the after market", says Claes Björk, president and CEO of Skanska. "We will be able to more easily serve local markets and adapt our services and product to prevailing demand."
"Skanska's strong international expansion in recent years has created a need to adapt our organiza-tion to the new demands we encounter. The three new business areas - Sweden, Europe and USA - will each account for one third of Group sales. I also see a value in giving Skanska in Sweden its own a clear identity," continues Claes Björk.
"Combining the real estate and BOT operations under the same roof will enable us to capitalize on the years of experience and expertise that Skanska possesses in project development," says Claes Björk.
Per-Ingemar Persson, currently head of the Skanska South construction division in Sweden will be-come head of the Sweden business area. Anders C. Karlsson, currently head of the Industry business area, will be responsible for the Europe business area. Stuart Graham, presently head of Slattery Skanska in the US, will become head of the USA business area. Mats Wäppling, deputy manager of the Real Estate business area, will be responsible for Real Estate and Project Development.
"Although all of the details of the new organization are not complete, the direction is clear. There-fore, I decided to inform Skanska employees and the market about the main features in Skanska's strategy for the future and what will imply in organizational terms," concludes Claes Björk.
