Skanska scores breakthrough in Indian road market

In winning an approximately SEK 95 million roadway order, Skanska has taken an important step into the Indian road construction market. The customer is the Maharashtra State Road Administration.

The need for an infrastructure, primarily roads, harbors and power stations, is projected to increase in India in the years immediately ahead. The need is for more than 10,000 kilometers of roadways by 2015.

"The Indian civil engineering market is very attractive long term. We have a major advantage based on the experiences of working in the Indian market through our power station project in Uri, which was completed last year," says Stig Holmqvist, Head of Region South within Skanska International Civil Engineering.

The current assignment involves one of four stages of the 65-kilometer section of highway between Mumbai (formerly Bombay) and Poona in western India. Skanska is responsible for building the concrete roadways on the 35-meter-wide six-lane highway.

"The project will be carried out to the highest international standards and at a rapid pace," relates Stig Holmqvist.

Skanska has extensive experience in road construction. One of the largest highway projects in the world, the Central Artery, is currently under way in the U.S. in Boston, Massachusetts, where Skanska is performing work for about SEK 7.3 billion.
