Skanska's US subsidiary, Sordoni Skanska, has secured a contract to manage the expansion of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The contract is valued at USD 46.7 M, approximately SEK 493 M, and the customer is the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
The contract will be included in order bookings for the first quarter of 2002.
The new cancer facility will meet the increased need for more space to perform research, and for education, patient treatment and cancer prevention activities. Two of the facility's five floors will be dedicated to clinical departments and three floors will contain laboratories.
Work on the 13,000-sq. m. (139,000-sq. f.) extension in New Brunswick has commenced and is scheduled for completion in December 2003. The existing facility will remain in operation throughout the construction project.
The US healthcare sector is continuing to grow. According to a report published this month in Building Design and Construction Magazine, Cahners economists report that construction spending in the American healthcare sector is expected to amount to USD 20.8 billion this year, corresponding to an increase of 7.1 percent compared with 2001. Skanska is the third-largest construction services company in the US healthcare sector, according to the ENR-ranking for 2001.
