April 14, 2000   Skanska awarded major environmental project in USA for USD 37.6 million, SEK 320 million Skanska’s US subsidiary Tidewater Skanska has been awarded a contract to restore a large bird sanctuary on Poplar Island outside Baltimore, Maryland. The order is valued at USD 37.6 million, about SEK 320 million. The customer is the Department of the Army, Corp of Engineers. The assignment is to restore Poplar Island in Chesapeake Bay, southwest of Baltimore on the US East Coast, to its approximate size in 1847. This would create a surface area of about 1,100 acres of which half will be wetlands. Under this contract, 12-kilometer dike will be built around the current remnants of Poplar Island, which has been heavily eroded. Later, the small island group’s upland and wetland habitats will be restored using dredged material from the Port of Baltimore. The dredged material, totally about 29 million cubic meters, will be used to reclaim land inside the dike. In addition, smaller dams and channels will be created to create a complex of varying habitats for birds. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources have identified Poplar Island as a valuable nesting and nursery area for many species of wildlife, including bald eagles, osprey, heron and egret. Skanska USA, had sales in 1999 of SEK 35 billion and at year-end 1999 had an order backlog of SEK 67 billion. ___________________________________________________   For further information please contact: Edward Keeter, Vice President Administration, Tidewater Skanska Group, Tel. +1 757-578-4100
