Skanska to lead hydropowerproject in Peru: Skanska's share of project is SEK 580 million

Skanska and the state-owned power company EGECEN have reached an agreement whereby Skanska will construct the new Yuncan hydropower plant in Peru.

The contract amount is SEK 970 M, of which Skanska's share is approximately 60%. The assignment was landed in international competition and will be carried out in an international consortium with the local contracting company Cosapi SA and the Japanese construction company Chizaki. The consortium will be lead by Skanska International Civil Engineering AB.

Financing is being provided by the government financing institution in Japan OECF.

The project mainly involves underground work, including a power station with an output of 134 MW. Slightly more than 20 kilometers of rock tunnels are included which will be cut by two TBM tunnel boring machines.

The plant will be a so-called run-of-the-river power station which does not require any damming through utilizing the natural fall of the Paucartambo and Huachon rivers. Accordingly, the environmental impact is minimized in the same manner as at the Uri power station completed by Skanska in northern India in 1997. The project will be carried out at a height of 1,800 -2,400 meters above sea level in the eastern Andes 330 kilometers from Lima.

Work will begin in June. The construction time is 36 months.

During 1999, Skanska International Civil Engineering will complete the SEK 2.5 billion Urrá project in Colombia. In addition, Skanska is involved in hydropower project totaling about SEK 600 M in Pakistan and Iceland. A new SEK 450 M project will be started up in Sri Lanka in the near future.

During the past 25 years Skanska has carried out a number of projects in Latin America. Through acquisition of the Argentinean construction company SADE earlier this year, the Group has further strengthened its presence on the continent.
