Skanska Safety Week – the world’s largest safety at work activity

This will be the ninth year that Skanska will organize Safety Week, which will start on Monday, May 13th. The theme is: “Lead and Learn in Safety. Take the Next Step.” It is about taking a next step personally, in teams and at organizational level to deploy a safer work environment at the workplaces, where everybody assumes a responsibility to make improvements for their own sake and the sake of others. 

– Our target is zero workplace accidents. Everybody is entitled to come home from work in a good condition. To achieve this target, all of us have to take a next step to safer workplaces. It takes more than rules to ensure a safe work environment. It is also about a way of thinking and acting, says Johan Karlström, President and CEO of Skanska.

Skanska is working systematically to reduce the number of workplace accidents. The intermediate target is to eliminate three of four workplace accidents by 2015 compared to the 2010 results. As part of its preventive work, Skanska also follows up serious incidents that did not result in an accident, but could potentially have done so. Over the past six years, Skanska has reduced the number of work-related accidents by more than 50 percent.

During Safety Week, thousands of activities will take place at Skanska’s workplaces and offices across the world. Aside from Skanska’s 57,000 employees, these activities will also encompass subcontractors, suppliers, partners and customers. The activities will range from seminars and workshops addressing safe working methods to meetings with suppliers, worksite visits by management focusing on a safe work environment, rescue techniques used in an accident situation in collaboration with fire emergency personnel and management training programs focused on safety leadership.
