The Husky Union Building (HUB) renovated to include a new three-level atrium dotted with student lounges and informal meeting spaces is the heart and soul of the University of Washington. Our work on the 276 465-SF HUB included significant seismic improvements to the aging structure providing the team with many opportunities to share our collective renovation experience. This challenging project included a partial renovation of the sub-basement basement and ground floors; opening up the interior structure on the first second and third floors; seismic improvements involving new shear wall and diaphragm connections; new roofs and slate roof restoration; windows replacements; masonry restoration; and landscaping improvements around the entire building which encompass both hardscape and softscape. Specific elements of the HUB include student activities and student government flexible auditorium and performance space food service bowling alley book store and retail bike shop administration offices meeting conference and ballroom space. The project received LEED Gold certification. In addition the HUB is located in the heart of campus bordered by the busiest roads on campus and pedestrian thoroughfares. To maintain access for students and services to the neighboring buildings our team developed a logistics and communications plan that addressed numerous stakeholders. Our plan helped minimize disruption and allow the adjoining building to be in continuous operation. Completed on time and budget the HUB as a staple to the university is once again a place for vibrant student activity.
