Cumming Advanced Water Reclamation Plant

The city of Cumming, Ga., selected Skanska to expand and upgrade its Advanced Water Reclamation Facility from a capacity of 3 million gallons per day to 8 million gallons per day. The contract was for $30.1 million.

Cumming has one wastewater treatment plant that was constructed in the early 1990s and upgraded to a 3 million gallons per day capacity in 2000. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division approved the expansion in order to meet the demand caused by rapid population growth in Forsyth County.

The scope of the project included construction of:
· new headworks
· two new Orbal basins
· three clarifiers
· a plate settler
· sand filters
· influent pump station
· additional centrifuge
· a two-story control building
· a Cannibal biosolids reduction system

Skanska also installed a UV disinfection system. The new system eliminates the risks associated with chlorine usage, which was used prior to the upgrade. The process does not alter the taste, smell, or color of water, does not require chemicals and does not release toxic by-products into water.

The Cannibal biosolids reduction system works in conjunction with the activated sludge treatment system previously in use. The Cannibal system uses fine drum screens to remove inert material from the activated sludge and an anoxic process to digest the remaining sludge mass. As a result of this process the amount of sludge for disposal in the county’s landfill has been greatly reduced.
