Green vision, strategy and goals

Skanska's environmental commitment relates to impacts of our operations and processes, and the long-term environmental performance of buildings and infrastructure delivered by our construction and development projects.

In keeping with the Care for Life value, Skanska promotes green solutions and seeks to conduct operations in green ways. Through the Group's Journey to Deep Green™, Skanska aspires to go beyond compliance and to push toward future-proof projects – projects intended to accommodate future environmental demands and conditions. Learn more about our purpose and values.

The strategy focuses on zero/low-carbon solutions, which support the carbon reduction ambitions of many customers and of society. Another part of the strategy is significantly reducing the Group's carbon emissions footprint by 2030, in line with the Paris international climate agreement.

Beyond providing benefits to customers, the environment and society, our ambition to minimize carbon emissions also drives improved efficiencies in the Group's operations. This reduces usage or emissions of energy, carbon, materials and water, lowering costs and requiring smarter and more collaborative ways of working.

To further this strategy, Skanska conducts carbon analyses and works on developing carbon roadmaps and action plans.

Goals and performance

Skanska uses Green Key Indicators to measure green performance. These cover three areas: increasing the level of green business; management support and training employees on green subjects; and supporting teams to deliver projects with improved green profiles.

As defined in the Skanska Color Palette™, Green refers to when construction processes and/or building and infrastructure performance are beyond compliance, but do not have a near-zero environmental impact. Skanska measures Green revenue for Construction Business Units and Green value for Project Development units.

Climate target

Skanska has set a Group target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045. This target encompasses all business streams – Construction, Residential Development and Commercial Development – and the value chain associated with all projects. Our value chain includes suppliers, subcontractors and those connected to the use phase of the buildings and infrastructure we create.

Along the way, by 2030 Skanska will decrease carbon emissions by 50 percent across all three business streams. For this milestone, the value chain component is limited to that associated with our own development projects.

Green revenue

Percentage of total Construction revenue that is Green or Deep green, as defined by the Skanska Color Palette™ increased to 46 percentage in 2018 from 43.4 percentage in 2017.

Green market value

By 2020, the Group aims to have all project developments at 100 percent Green, as defined by the Skanska Color PaletteTM. As of December 31, 2018, we reached 93 percentage, a slightly decrease from 94 percentage in 2017.
