Environmental management

By its nature, construction – when not proactively managed – has the potential to create negative impacts on the natural environment. Done well, it has the potential to have a significant positive impact. Therefore, Skanska sees a big opportunity in proactive environmental management.

Green track record

Skanska has been proactive on environmental management since the mid-1990s. We produced our first environmental report in 1997 and our first environment policy in 1998. By 2000, all business units worldwide and the Group level were certified to the ISO 14001 international environmental management standard, an industry first. These certifications remain in place.

Environmental policy

Skanska's environmental policy and Skanska Color Palette™ define the Group's environmental agenda and provide a framework for continually improving the environmental credentials of projects, products and services. Environmental performance is measured and reported quarterly through Green Strategic Indicators (GSI).

Environmental management system

The environmental policy is converted to day-to-day practice
through an environmental management system (EMS), ensuring effective management of environmental risks. This system supports the achievement of Skanska's business objectives and goals.

Each office and project site are covered by an environmental management system third-party certified to the ISO 14001:2015 international environmental management standard. Skanska has 25 certificates across the Group.

In 2018, Skanska received zero major non-conformance (MNC) citations from external auditors. In 2017 one major non-conformance was received which was closed two weeks after the audit. Skanska actively encourages the Group's auditors to provide suggestions for improvement.

Measuring green performance

The Green Key Performance Indicators are used to measure green performance which covers three areas:

  1. Increasing the level of green business;
  2. Management support and training employees on green subjects;
  3. Reducing environmental impact from our projects

Business units reports quarterly on their performance into the sustainability reporting database.
