Transforming an existing facility

We redeveloped Alloa’s HMP Glenochil for the Scottish Prison Service, transforming the existing facility into a modern, fit-for-purpose custodial environment.

Situated near the local village, the community-facing prison required extensive modernisation. We created two blocks, with a total of 534 cells, 25 per cent of which were designed for double occupancy. The capacity was for 670 inmates of high, medium and low-security classification, with a 660-person daily average population.

Improved environment for all users

Old buildings were demolished and a range of new facilities built to provide a suitable environment for inmates, visitors and custodians. These include:

  • an education building
  • visiting area
  • car park
  • health centre.

Uninterrupted provision during construction

One of Scotland’s major sites for managing sex offenders, Glenochil holds adult male offenders serving short, long-term and life sentences, plus extended-sentence offenders (Order of Lifelong Restrictions).

The prison remained operational throughout the construction of the four-phase project. This approach ensured facilities for inmates and staff were always available and that maximum security was retained as work progressed.

Our work included construction, fit-out and training the prison facilities team to use the new building management system.
