Skanska will work with WSDOT to replace the existing bridge with a new side-by-side roadway that will meet current seismic standards.

Detailed Scope includes the following:

Replacement of the Alaskan Way Viaduct between S. Holgate Street to S. King Street includes: construction of bridges, utility relocation work (water, storm, 26 KV overhead and underground electrical utility systems, lighting, sewer and fire protection) HMA and PCC paving, constructing walls, partial demolition of existing viaduct, grading for railroad tracks, excavation and disposal of contaminated materials, pile work, pedestrian/bicycle shared use path, cement deep soil mixing and jet grouting, traffic control, detours, traffic signals and illumination work, pavement marking, guardrail, fencing, temporary water pollution and erosion control.

The End Result

The southern mile of the Alaskan Way Viaduct will be replaced with a new side-by-side roadway that meets current earthquake standards, has wider lanes and improves mobility for people and goods in the area south of downtown.
