Portland State University Academic & Student Recreation Center

  • Portland State University wanted a fast-track, sustainable, mixed-use complex for both students and local residents to enjoy, and the city of Portland wanted a more central location for its archives. Skanska partnered with Yost Grube Hall Architecture, PSU and the city of Portland to exceed the owner's vision by delivering a LEED Gold facility one semester ahead of schedule.

Skanska, in partnership with architect partner Yost Grube Hall, led design and construction of a 206,000-SF recreation center amidst Portland State University's downtown campus. The new, six-story facility features an eye-catching mixture of glass and brick, with accents of silver metal paneling. Students have access to an elevated pool, a running track and athletic courts. The facility also includes the City of Portland's archives, the Oregon Chancellor's office and academic space. Operable windows at recreation administration, courts, pools, offices and classrooms provide natural ventilation. Skylights and clerestory windows supply natural lighting to the climbing gym.
