The $24 million, 43,000-SF three-story research facility includes highly specialized research labs for applied and fundamental research in bioengineering, biomaterials, bionanotechnology, communications technology and sensor technology with support spaces, offices and associated areas. The building consists of vibration sensitive research, including imaging, magnetic, optics and water testing labs; and a mechanical and electrical room on the first level; faculty level research areas and office support, chemistry, bio-nanotechnology and cold rooms on the second floor; and a gabled roof area with mechanical and electrical support systems is located on the third floor, along with office and research spaces and additional labs. The exterior of the building consists of stone veneer “Hokie stone” with masonry backup, precast concrete parapet, trim and special shapes and a curtain wall window system. The project achieved LEED Gold certification through the use of both regional and recycled materials; a focus on indoor air quality control; and careful selection of energy efficient lab equipment and lighting and occupancy controls.
